Purpose of Position

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of North Dakota invites applications for a 12-month, non-tenure track Assistant Research Professor position beginning May 2024. This position will contribute to research within the department focused on inventing and developing technologies to produce sustainable fuels, chemicals, and materials in collaboration with other researchers from the College of Engineering and Mines, across campus, at national laboratories, and other organizations. Successful candidates will also contribute to the department's mission by teaching up to one course per term.

Duties & Responsibilities
The successful applicant will have the following primary responsibilities and duties:
Conduct research in the area of process creation, development, and scale-up for the production of sustainable fuels, chemicals, and materials including the design of equipment for the translation of lab-scale technologies to continuous bench and pilot scales
Conduct techno-economic evaluation of novel technologies
Manage, troubleshoot, and provide minor repairs to a variety of analytical instruments and train students in the proper use of these instruments
Conduct engineering scholarly activities including grant preparation and submission, mentoring of graduate student researchers, publication of results, and development of an externally funded research program
Communicate effectively in English with students, faculty, staff, and other professional colleagues in person and at-a-distance (phone, email, etc.)
Teach up to one course per semester, both on-campus and online, potentially including both classroom and laboratory settings.
Participate in school, college/university, and professional service activities as needed
Required Competencies
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proven ability to operate effectively as a team player and leader who works effectively with faculty, staff, and students, and has strong interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated commitment to creating a workplace and classroom culture that welcomes, respects, and supports individuals from diverse background
Ability to conduct process design, including process simulation, and to translate novel process design into physical experimental systems
Ability to apply modern process control design
Ability to conduct broad cost estimates, operating cost estimates, and economic analyses
Minimum Requirements
B.S. and Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering or a closely related field
Experience conducting research to transform renewable resources, such as biomass or microorganism-generated resources, into fuels and chemical intermediates by chemical reactions and biological transformations
Experience translating process technologies from lab scale through pilot scale
Experience in gas and liquid chromatography instrumental analyses
Experience teaching undergraduate courses in chemical engineering
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with online engineering teaching
Excellent written communication skills
Experience in teaching a capstone undergraduate course in chemical engineering
Experience in the specification of process control schemes
